I'm not sure if this was already suggested long ago, I can't even remember if it was, but I think that we should be able to set the genres of our games. I'm sure many players are now looking for new games of their own desire to play rather than the same games that are featured on the front page weekly.
I recently published a map called, "The Floating Land: Trilogy". It is a single player action-adventure game, but for the most part, it is a puzzle game. I received a handful of comments from players saying about "How much they have been looking for a game like this".
Sure, those games I see now at the top such as "2 Player Tron 1.9", or "WORLD RACING", those are fun. But let me ask you this: have you ever found that one new game on KoGaMa that you really enjoyed and want to play it again, but can't find it anywhere? There are a few great games that I recently saw on the front page for a couple of weeks randomly disappear, such as "Micro Drive", a multiplayer racing game, or "Simon Says", an addictive multiplayer game based off of skill and reaction time. Luckily, I know who exactly made these two games, so I can easily search them up and find the games from there but it still takes some effort. The big problem is that some people may have trouble finding these games again because they have eventually faded away from being featured in Highlights of the Week as a "Fun Game", or the players aren't able to remember who made the map, or both.
But here's the scoop. KoGaMa gets flooded daily with parkour games. At almost every second of the day, a new parkour game is created on here. Sure, they are highly addictive. Sure, they increase your skill a bit with each play. But don't you at least get a little bit tired of seeing them? Aren't you at least hoping that you will see some other different preferred genre on here at some point? At this point, I think that parkour games are one of the big reasons why KoGaMa stays alive to this day. Each day on KoGaMa is a "parkour map building competition", to see which parkour map can get more plays than another, to see which parkour game can help earn someone the 1 Million Plays Badge, etc. and I think the main cause of all of this hullabaloo was "OSTRY", one of the highest played and liked parkour maps of all time.
I ended up being friends with a few newer players over the course of a month or so, or at least ran into the accounts of some newer players, and I saw a few comments such as these:
We had a great community of skilled players about a year or two ago that would manage to create the most mind-blowing games that I've (at least) ever seen. Highly recognizable and advanced creators such as Exelaratore or Blitzgrutel have stopped building for the most part probably because they either don't have the time at the moment due to other responsibilities, they ran out of ideas and inspiration, or have just been offline due to some unknown reason. Due to this, we are, for the most part, stuck with the same games that we have been seeing now.
Statistically, KoGaMa's popularity and visitor count has started to decline, ever since March of this year,(Source: www.similarweb.com/website/kogama.com). Even those popular YouTubers who are known for playing KoGaMa have been uploading less videos about KoGaMa. It is sad to see, as someone who has witnessed some of the different phases of KoGaMa since 2012.
You see, I started off playing KoGaMa on the Friends server. Sounds funny, doesn't it? It's a test server, so why would I start playing on there? Well, it kind of used to be a server for the American players at one point. We were a much smaller community at the time, but definitely the most amazing community I've ever seen on KoGaMa. The games you would see on the front page were games such as these: "Lost...", "CubeGun Defense", "The Forge", "The Clock Towers - Pyrotower", "Fire Awakening", "Self-Wish", and many more. Let me tell you guys something: there were no Highlights of the Week back when these games were published. These games were all popular because the community enjoyed them, and they naturally made it to the top of the page. Let me also ask you guys this: how many of these games I just mentioned are a parkour game? You know, like the ones you see now at the top of the page currently. Maybe they did have some parkour elements in them, such as the Clock Tower game I mentioned, but they weren't parkour games. Not to mention it, the parkour games that we had back then were a lot different, of course, and they prioritized heavily on the usage of the Parkour Block, rather than using Swords or other weapons to break open the Cracked Material to get to the next Checkpoint or level (which I think is absolutely absurd LOL), or using duplicated items from popular players to hopscotch on to the next level. Anyways, here is a great example of such: EBC - Parkour Edge
Also referring to the statistics that I mentioned earlier, it appears that the amount of players here in the United States has been slowly increasing, and when it starts to increase even more in the future, (which I'm pretty positive will happen), those players could potentially be stuck with games like this, and from my perspective, if I were playing KoGaMa for the first time, I think I would find such pretty strange. Sure I will think that it's fun at first but of course I'll eventually get tired of it. But every community is also different. The American gaming community is used to playing games with guns, cars, sports, and also those games made by Nintendo and Sega and whatnot. But of course, not to mention, the games on KoGaMa are now recognized as "online games", games that you can now find through some sort of "Click Games" website. When I was in elementary, middle school, and sometimes even high school, I remember we would all tell each other about these websites such as "coolmathgames" when we were in the library or computer lab as a class and we would all go on them and play all sorts of fun, different single-player games such as "Fireboy and Watergirl", "Bloxors", "Rotate and Roll" or other things along those lines. They were so fun and addictive, you didn't have to really find other games to play. But what if they were replaced with KoGaMa games at the time? Sure! KoGaMa is really fun and addictive, something that you can play and talk with your friends all day on. But I'm talking about what if it was all just parkour games? It's all the same patterns. No one really wants to play these kinds of games over and over again, they want to find another game to play, and that's why I think that's the reason why KoGaMa has started to decline a bit.
But what is the solution here? At the same time, KoGaMa's popularity is both increasing and decreasing. Don't you think that those who come on here would want to find the game of their choice by now? As I mentioned, KoGaMa is almost becoming some sort of "Click Games" website. We need to have game categories! I cannot emphasize that enough. Whether if it's something like "game tags" or "game genre search" or both, we need something. I want to see KoGaMa grow, not fade away. We have an amazing community on here. I want to keep it going and watch it flourish even more. It is an astounding game builder, and I have always found it easier and more enjoyable than Roblox to build, create and socialize on here. It is not just a click games website, it is something more than that.
