One of my friends [f12, i don't know] and I were talking and it said he was offline so i figured he had to go, and then he sends me a message offliine. is it because he lives in another country than me?

See also: Offline Friend Activity [Bug]I'm assuming the devs changed how player activity was monitored. Players have to make an action on the website for their online status to persist, and the yellow "AFK" status is only temporary for the next 6-10 minutes while no action is taken. An "action" can be anything that requests something from the web server like going to a new page on Kogama, loading a different page of feed, or opening a PM chat window - to name a few. What this means is that players who sit on the same page with a PM chat window already open will eventually appear offline but still be able to chat with you. It's misleading, yes... but there could be reason for it. I think websites that check for activity status (like FaceBook) will periodically ping your connection to see if you still have a browser with the website open. Maybe this costs resources that Kogama can't afford or simply doesn't need. But I'm just speculating...
